Camp de Bûcherons: a place of remembrance in the heart of the forest
The Camp de bûcherons is a choice accommodation and restaurant venue for visitors to the Matapédia-et-les-Plateaux region and its famous Route des belvédères. It lies nestled deep in the forest, in an area of exceptional wilderness beauty. It is also a place of remembrance honouring the men and women who experienced the adventure of the logging camps in the early days of the 20th century.
Built of logs in homage to the methods of the time, its buildings stand on the bank of Chaîne de Roches brook, at the exit of the village of Saint-François-d’Assise.
Project background
1996 : The Groupement agroforestier de la Ristigouche inc. came up with the idea to build a logging camp that would allow for the integrated management of local resources. According to the Group, this accommodation and restaurant project had the potential to become the driving force behind the cultural and tourism industry in the Matapédia-et-les-Plateaux region.
At the end of the same year, the Corporation d’aménagement multiressources et du patrimoine des Plateaux (CAMPP) was created and took over from the Groupement to bring the project to fruition.
2000 : The current site of the Camp de bûcherons, on the bank of Chaîne de Roches brook in Saint-François-d’Assise, was chosen as the site for its construction. The five municipalities in the Matapédia-et-les-Plateaux region then approached Anne-Marie Moreau, the owner of the land in question, who generously agreed to cede part of her land.
2018 : The Camp de bûcherons became the owner of the land.
2019 : Two new cottages were built at the Camp de bûcherons site.
